      Story Behind the Art
Observing the Temple treasury and the offerings made by those that came and went, the Lord was greatly touched by the tender heart of a lowly widow. Some would say her two mites were pittance especially in comparison to others’ seemingly generous offerings, but the Lord claimed that her simple contribution was worthy of great note. Others gave out of their excess but she out of her want, a much more difficult ask. Giving all that she had was a reflection of her true devotion to God, placing her love for Him above her own needs. She in essence gave more than everyone else; she gave her soul, loving God with all her might.
Clearly the literal size of our offering does not necessarily reflect our true devotion to God and isn’t as important to Him as is the heart behind it. Yes, at one point, the Lord did ask a highly wealthy man to sacrifice all of his many possessions to follow him, challenging his true allegiance. The Lord requires our whole hearts and will attempt to clear any barriers to them, even our possessions if necessary. Whether or not He asks us to literally let go of all that we have, His ultimate aim is all that we are that we might create a more sure and loving bond. If we in turn truly treasure the Lord and His love for us and wish to reciprocate, we must sacrifice anything that stands between us and love Him with all our might, mind, and strength.
