This piece is inspired by Matthew 18:12 ‘if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?’
I think all of us can relate to this wandering sheep in some way. I know that I have been the lost sheep many times in my life. In the times where I feel isolated, afraid, full of fear, sorrow, anger, or loneliness, there is one constant. Him. The Good Shepherd who always seeks me when I wander. Wandering is many different things for me. I wander away when I am stressed, overwhelmed, sad, going through hard things, when I have really big and scary questions that don’t have answers, when I make mistakes. Even when I’m looking away from Him, just like the little black sheep in this painting, He is coming to find me again. He never turns His back on His precious, wandering sheep.
If you look closely at this piece, you can see the herd of sheep very far in the distance of this painting. When I see that, I am reminded of how far He travels to find me. How many mountains and valleys and streams He has to pass through to be reunited with me. And He does it over and over again. He does it for me, and He does it for you. He will always leave the ninety and nine, and go into the mountains to find the one
