A special painting for Mother’s Day. I know that Christ remembers ALL the mothers. The expecting mothers, the grieving mothers, the hopeful mothers, the mothers in the thick of parenting, the grandmothers, the adoptive mothers, the birth mothers, the single mothers, the mothers in heaven, the step mothers, the stand-in mothers, the waiting mothers, the foster mothers, the biological mothers.
In this painting, Christ stands with and comforts many different types of mothers. If you swipe through the slides, you will get a peek into their individual stories. The women and Christ are all connected by Kintsugi (???, "golden joinery"). This is a Japanese pottery technique where broken pottery is put back together with a gold lacquer. This technique has become a huge part of my life and my work, and I felt like it needed to be incorporated into this painting. To me Kintsugi is a reminder that Christ is able to heal and make something incredibly beautiful out of what I think is shattered. I know that Christ perfectly knows and understands the different trials and heartbreak you have endured in your journeys as mothers. Today is a day to celebrate all kinds of mothers and recognize that every mother’s journey looks different. Every mother has different trials, obstacles, pains, and heartaches. The Kintsugi in this piece symbolizes that Christ can take that heartache and make something beautiful.
This piece is also a reminder that our brokenness connects us. What we have been through and experienced allows us to connect and love others. If you feel lonely today, I hope this helps you remember that you belong. There are so many mothers who know what you are experiencing and love you. And there is the Savior, who I know with all my heart remembers ALL the mothers.
