My piece, titled “At Birth and Death”, is a homage to the dichotomies and chiasmus of blood that defined the crucifixion of Christ. Most of all it is a tribute to the women who were at the center of the story from start to finish. Throughout the painting the balance of light and dark, warm and cools, hard rocks and tender flowers, elicits the delicate and essential tension between the pain and despair of Christ’s death and the hope He ultimately brought. Mary, His mother, cradles in her arms a bloody piece of His clothing, reminiscent of the bloody swaddling clothes she once held Him in as a babe. Just as her blood was shed to bring Him into the world, so was His to birth salvation for all.
