Before doing this piece, I wrote the Aaronic Priesthood Theme out in a different style, Italic, very simple and centered on the page. It was copied and tacked up on the chalkboards in our meetinghouse where the young men met for class. I liked it but wanted to make another one, more elaborate, with color and symbols in it. I love how each word of this theme is carefully chosen for our day and gives Aaronic Priesthood holders a succinct guide for action and for happiness. For this piece, it made sense to divide the text into more manageable chunks for pondering and enabled me to put corresponding images close by. As for the lettering styles, I chose Roman capitals for stateliness and legibility and gothic (blackletter) because I think it is more masculine. Since gothic is less readable than some other styles, it requires focus on the words—which is the point!
